Session 27
Internet Resources for Financial and Managerial Accounting

Presenters:
Edmund Fenton, Eastern Kentucky University
Jessica Frazier, Eastern Kentucky University

Description:
Principles of Accounting students in both the financial and managerial accounting courses find that working with well-known companies' financial data and seeing the actual operations within companies reinforce the learning process. Rather than only using the textbook with its examples of partial annual reports or segment of operating activities, the internet offers the actual timely information that will not only enhance the classroom discussions but provide excellent resources for outside projects.

Participants will learn how to use the SEC's website to show students the enormous amount of information available that includes not only financial data but other business information. Selecting companies with which the students are already familiar (i.e., eBay, Apple) catches their interest and offers many venues for practical application of the textbook materials. Also, certain companies offer an internet view of their own operations including the manufacturing process that enhances the managerial accounting learning possibilities.

Visual additions to the classroom are needed in this day and age with our students so in tune with TV, videos games, and web browsing. Taking this format along with actual, current information into the classroom promotes learning by using the students' own day-to-day methods.
