CPE Session 1: Saturday, August 6, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Conducting Fraud Investigations: A Hands-on Workshop
Description/Objectives:
Fraud costs U.S. organizations about $600 billion annually or about 6 percent of gross revenues. About 75 percent of organizations suffered losses due to employee theft during the past year, with an average annual loss of $464,000. Financial crimes are clogging our criminal justice system and few law enforcement officers or auditors have the knowledge, skills, and experience to conduct successful fraud investigations. In this workshop you will learn how to effectively resolve fraud allegations, including topics such as the fraud theory approach, phases of a fraud investigation, investigative methods, summarizing findings, estimating losses, obtaining restitution, and providing litigation support. During the workshop you will complete three simulated fraud investigations from start to finish, thus providing you with the experience and confidence to conduct effective asset-theft fraud investigations.
Format/Structure:
The workshop objectives will be accomplished using live lecture, PowerPoint® slides, video segments, practical problems, and case simulations.
Intended Audience:
Accountants, Attorneys, Auditors, Controllers, Educators (especially in the areas of accounting and criminal justice), Loss Preventions Specialists, Managers, Private Investigators, and Law Enforcement Personnel.
Presenter:
Thomas Buckhoff, Georgia Southern University
