CPE Session 18: Sunday, August 7, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Advanced Projects for the Accounting Information Systems Class
Description/Objectives:
The workshop will cover advanced projects intended for the accounting information systems (AIS) or advanced AIS class, as follows:
- An "across cycles" MS Access database project: This project integrates the acquisition and revenue cycles, requires advanced data modeling skills (inheritance, policy definitions, and recursive relationships), illustrates how to integrate legacy data (in Excel and Word) into a relational database, and comes with a large number of queries that can be used to create assignments.
- SQL querying of a remote relational database: This assignment employs the open source mySQL database to set up a relational database on a server, to which students connect using the mySQL Control Center utility and run SQL queries. The database contains revenue related tables that are queried to answer ad hoc accounting questions.
- An Object-Oriented (OO) analysis and design project: This project integrates Use Cases, Class Diagrams, Activity Diagrams, State Transition Diagrams, and Collaboration Diagrams. Students start from an ill-defined business problem and use all of these techniques to end up with a VB.Net implementation.
- Creating a dynamic Web form with input controls: This assignment involves creating a Web sales order entry form in the ASP .NET language and using the built-in .NET validation controls to ensure completeness and accuracy of input.
Format/Structure:
The projects that will be covered in the workshop have been developed and successfully used by the presenters in their accounting information systems courses. For each project, the presenter will discuss the learning objectives and walk the audience through all the activities that are part of the project. The workshop is going to be hands-on and participants must bring a Windows laptop, on which MS Access® and free workshop-related programs must be preinstalled. A variety of handouts will be distributed, including the assignment itself, notes for the instructor, an assignment solution, and an in-class demonstration handout for student use.
Intended Audience:
The workshop is aimed at instructors teaching accounting information systems (AIS) classes who would like to move beyond basic spreadsheet and database projects in their classes. Participants should have working knowledge of relational databases, HTML, and systems analysis and design. For use in class, some of the projects require instructor and student access to a Windows-based server.
