CPE Session 23: Sunday, August 7, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Assessing Competencies with Course-Embedded Rubrics
Description/Objectives:
Professional organizations and accrediting bodies are asking accounting faculty to identify, develop, and assess student competencies. Achieving consensus regarding the level of competency performance expected from students can be challenging but fruitful. Workshop participants will discuss how faculty can come to agreement on competencies and the expected level of performance for each competency. Furthermore, approaches to assessing student competencies vary widely. One approach to assessing competency performance is to embed the assessments into course activities and assignments. Assignments are collected or recorded and then evaluated by the instructor. Scoring or performance rubrics may be used to standardize the assessment process and permit assessments by multiple evaluators. In this session, participants will review rubrics for the personal competencies of writing, oral presentation, and teamwork. The session leaders will instruct the participants on the use of the writing and presentation rubrics, and will provide opportunities for using the rubrics to assess these competencies for students in introductory, upper-division, and graduate-level accounting courses. Actual student work will be utilized to illustrate the competency assessment process. The workshop will conclude with a discussion of the obstacles and benefits to using rubrics to assess competency performance.
Format/Structure:
Participation and interaction are the key descriptors of this session. The workshop facilitators will present short talks interspersed with question-and-answer sessions. The distinctive feature of the workshop will be the participants’ use of rubrics to assess student competencies in the areas of writing and oral presentation. Actual student work from introductory, upper-division, and graduate-level courses will be assessed by the workshop participants. Small group discussions will focus on the obstacles and benefits to using rubrics as an assessment tool. Participants who have used rubrics are encouraged to bring examples to share with others.
Intended Audience:
This workshop is directed to faculty who are concerned with ensuring that each student is achieving expected performance on the key personal competencies of writing, oral communication, and teamwork.
