CPE Session 26: Sunday, August 7, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act and the
Governmental and Nonprofit Accounting Instruction

Description/Objectives:
Has the Sarbanes-Oxley Act changed the teaching and practicing of governmental and nonprofit accounting, and if so, how? Speakers for this CPE session will address these issues from their specific vintage points of standards setters and seasoned instructors of governmental and nonprofit accounting. Volunteers include David Mosso, Chairman of the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board; Terry Patton, Director of Research, Governmental Accounting Standards Board; Jim Chan, Professor of Accounting and founding editor of RIGNA, University of Illinois at Chicago; and Rita Cheng, Professor of Accounting and Associate Vice Chancellor, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. The workshop will consist of four separate presentations each one lasting approximately 55 minutes. There will be plenty of time for questions, so plan ahead and come and join us in San Francisco.

Format/Structure:
The workshop will consist of four separate presentations, each one lasting approximately 55 minutes for a total of 220 minutes (240 minutes less a 20-minute break). Tentative presentation titles:

Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Standards Setting by FASAB-David Mosso
Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Standards Setting by GASB-Terry Patton
Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Teaching of Nonprofit Accounting and Reporting Issues- Jim Chan
Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Trends and Changes in Nonprofit Education-Rita Cheng

It is possible that other sessions will be added later, but this is the current plan. Approximately two-thirds of each time slot will be reserved for presentation with the remaining one-third used for questions and comments.

Intended Audience:
The intended audience for this CPE session is AAA members who teach and/or practice governmental and nonprofit accounting, reporting, and auditing.
