Edmonds Abstract: A new technology, known as a Student Response System (SRS), is enabling students to become active participants in their learning environment. SRS technology enables immediate information exchange between student and professor. The teacher is able to assess student comprehension of material and to display the results of that assessment to individual students and the class as a whole on a real time basis. Proponents claim that the interactive features of SRSs motivate students to attend class, to show up on time, and to pay attention during class. We implemented SRS, as a bonus system, in an introductory accounting course and surveyed students to see if the system satisfied the vendor’s claims. When SRS technology is used as a bonus system it motivates students to attend class, encourages them to pay attention in class, provides them with an early warning of problem areas, and gives them the opportunity to judge their performance relative to other students. |
