Work-Life Balance and Gender Issues Facing the Accounting Profession

Murphy Smith
Texas A&M University

Abstract: Finding the balance between work and family life has always been a challenge for working people. While people have varying levels of talent, ability, intellect, education, wealth, reputation, leadership skills, and other attributes, no matter how rich or poor a person may be, everyone has the same amount of time each day to allocate to work, family, and other activities. In times past, when women made up a smaller segment of the workforce, work-life balance was more a problem for men who were their homes’ only breadwinner. Today, the problem of work-life balance is an issue for both women and men. Accountants, like people in other fields, are making choices that place priority on aspects of life other than work. The purpose of this study is to examine current developments and evaluate how the accounting profession is dealing with work-life balance and gender issues.
