Timothy J. Fogarty Jack M. Ruhl Abstract: The position of departmental chairmanship has not been seriously studied for the accounting discipline. This paper considers the people who hold these leadership roles and attempts to draw some conclusions about the nature of this role. Using data, the paper suggests that chairmanship is more likely to be construed as an alternative career track in lower prestige programs. In high prestige programs, service as chairman appears to be more of the brief tour of duty in the career focused on other goals. |
