Ten Tips For Improving College Teaching

Description/Objectives:
This particular workshop will tend to center on what I call "the learning triangle" (student and teacher preparation for class, the actual classroom experience, post-class follow-up). I also want to encourage faculty to consider their role in student learning. For example, do they view themselves as football coaches who have a primary responsibility for achieving student success or as Boy Scout leaders who want students to take responsibility for their own success? I plan to lead the workshops through a series of survey questions where I ask participates to evaluate themselves and then also ask them to respond as their students might and as an outside observer might. These questions can lead to general discussions or small group projects. Finally, through a series of short cases, I hope to assist faculty in addressing problems that frequently limit teaching effectiveness. My goal is simply to have each participant consider how he or she teaches and a few changes that might prove beneficial.

Presenter:
Joe Hoyle, University of Richmond.
