CPE Session 16: Sunday, August 6, 8:00 AM – 11:00 AM

An Innovative Model for Teaching the
Introductory Financial Accounting Course

Description/Objectives:
The purpose of the workshop is to provide information about the redesigned introductory financial accounting course. The primary material is delivered via multimedia tools within the WebCT shell. In addition, students receive direction and reinforcement through weekly (optional) review time with the instructor and have access to 40 tutoring hours every week. With these resources creating a flexible, virtual classroom for mastering basic skills, the instructor uses the traditional classroom time for activities that promote student interaction and the use of effective problem-solving techniques in a "learn-by-doing" environment. During the weekly mandatory lab sessions that meet for two hours, students work in teams on cases that simulate real-world business/accounting scenarios and submit business memos for evaluation. The objective of this newly added component is to enhance the experiential learning process, provide students the opportunity to develop their interpersonal and communication skills, foster a sense of community, and ensure student commitment to producing quality work products.
