Internet-Based Financial Reporting

Description/Objectives:
The objective of the session is to provide a strong indication of the direction in which financial and business reporting is headed, taking into account the impact of the Internet and other related technologies.

The workshop will focus on the emerging trends in the use of the Internet for financial reporting, with online demonstrations and examples. It will relate these to fundamental reporting principles and trends to broaden financial reporting. It will draw on experience out of research in the area, as well as reporting contests and analyses held by the Investor Relations Institutes and Professional Accounting Organizations.

Past research on the content of the Annual Report, which is currently being updated, conducted by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants, as well as their research publication, The impact of Technology on Financial Reporting, and related studies of FASB and the IASB that dealt with the use of the Internet for financial reporting will provide an initial grounding for the session. Also, the use of XBRL for financial reporting will be examined.

The examples of current practice shown online will be carefully organized so as to show facets of the major trends taking place.

Presenter:
Gerald Trites, St. Francis Xavier University.
