Using Student Response Systems (Clickers) to Improve Teaching Effectiveness and Administrative Efficiency

Description/Objectives:
Student Response System (SRS) technology enables immediate information exchange between student and professor, even in mass section classes. Instructors using SRSs engage students by asking questions. Students answer the questions by using response pads that operate similar to a TV remote control. The response pad data can be instantaneously displayed to the class. SRSs can also be used for class management functions such as taking attendance, determining tardiness, and assessing student participation. The potential educational benefits for students include motivation to attend class, encouragement to pay attention during class, early warning of learning deficiencies, and peer-to-peer performance comparisons. Benefits for instructors include improved teaching effectiveness and administrative efficiency. After completing this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. List a set of advantages and disadvantages for SRS systems.
  2. Prepare a brief lesson plan that includes SRS technology.
  3. Generate reports that summarize SRS captured data.

These objectives will be accomplished through a hands-on learning experience in which participants use actual response pads to take roll, register opinions, and answer quiz questions.

Presenters:
