ABSTRACT. The purpose of this paper is to extend the prior literature to establish a research framework of R&D collaboration - R&D investment - innovation – financial performance chain and test the direct and indirect relationship between R&D collaboration and financial performance. Using Taiwan’s high-technology industry as a research sample, I find that R&D collaborative firms increase their R&D investments. I also find evidence that firms engaging in R&D collaboration have a positive relationship with innovation and financial performance. Finally, I find that the relationship between R&D collaboration and financial performance is mediated by R&D investments and innovation. However, innovation explains a larger portion of performance than R&D investments and is a superior leading indicator of future financial performance.
