ABSTRACT. This study focuses on how business type, which a firm chooses according to its core competence, influences a firm’s R&D strategies that in turn affects the performance of it. How the interaction between a firm’s business type and life cycle stage affects the relationship between R&D investment and its performance is another focus of the study. We suggest that the relevance of R&D investment and performance will increase gradually comparing ODM/OEM to OBM firms. We suggest that the value-added effect to performance of the R&D investment by a high-tech firm will be influenced by the interaction between its business type and life cycle stage. R&D expenditures generate more significant benefits for OBM companies compared with ODM/OEM firms at the same life-cycle stage. We find that the gap of operating performance between OBM and ODM/OEM companies will become wider as firms emerge from the growth stage to enter the stagnant stage.
