ABSTRACT. The purpose of this project is to expose students to the use of XBRL- enabled financial statement analysis. This project is suitable for both graduate and undergraduate accounting and finance courses. The students will learn how to use SavaNet software to perform an analysis of two companies. The exercise demonstrates the benefits of XBRL-based software analysis over traditional financial statement analysis. The first part of the project familiarizes students with the software. Students work through an analysis of a single company. After students finish this analysis, they perform a comparison of two companies. Finally, students apply their understanding of financial statement analysis by answering a series of questions designed to assess their understanding of the project. The project provides an extension to An Introduction to XBRL through the Use of Research and Technical Assignments, Farewell (2006).
