Academic Accounting in Canada: Bucking the North American Trend or the Last Bastion of Disciplinary Strength
Timothy J. Fogarty,
Case Western Reserve University
ABSTRACT. Following evidence of the decline of academic accounting in the USA, this study explores whether similar developments have occurred in Canada. An assessment of the Canadian professoriate in the discipline does not yield results that parallel US developments. In terms of raw numbers, the Canadian academic accountants are as numerous as they ever have been. However, the integrity of the tenure track has not been compromised as it has been in the US. The Canadian population of full time accounting instructors has been preserved over the years, and has never been stronger in terms of their credentials. A concern about Canada’s doctoral schools should be noted, however.
