Using Digital and Web Citations, and Electronic Downloads to Evaluate Research Impact

Daniel E. O' Leary, University of Southern California

ABSTRACT. This paper analyzes the use of digital and web citations, and newly available electronic download information, as a basis to evaluate research impact. Citations from existing sources like the Social Science Citation Index have long been used to evaluate impact and importance of research. As researchers have taken to posting their research on line, new citation sources, such as Google Scholar and CiteSeer, also provide a citation capability. Further, as journals increasingly become available on the Internet, new usage information, such as statistics on the number of times a paper has been downloaded, can be used to provide additional information about the importance or extent of use of particular research papers.
