ABSTRACT. Privacy emerges as a critical issue in an e-commerce environment because of a fundamental tension between corporate and consumer interests. Companies need to collect and use personal information to remain competitive while customers worry about the inappropriate collection and use of their personal information. Although several researchers have examined companies’ practices using posted privacy disclosure policies, they are usually examined U.S. companies. Furthermore, studies explored a difference among countries did not examine the extent to which companies’ privacy policies differ across countries and industries regarding Fair Information Practices (FIP) principles. We examined companies’ privacy policies by examining 420 companies’ privacy policy disclosures from six countries. Our results revealed a difference in companies’ privacy polices across countries and industries.
