ABSTRACT. There has been much discussion about immigration and what to do about it. President Bush has signed the Secure Fence Act, authorizing the building of a fence along approximately 700 miles of the 2000 mile border between the United States and Mexico. Also, funding for border security has increased from $4.6 billion to$10.4 billion. Border patrol agents have increased significantly by one third to 12,000. We will first discuss the administrative authorities who oversee immigration fraud, as well as their current strategies to fight illegal immigration. Then we will define and talk about the types of immigration fraud, including asylum, document (identity), and benefit fraud. We will then discuss the Government Accountability Office’s assessment of the current immigration system as well as proposed legislation to reduce illegal immigration. Finally, we will conclude with our assessment of the current situation and our outlook for the future of illegal immigration and fraud.
