ABSTRACT. Ethic of Care (EOC) theory proposes that ethical rules interact with situational variables in driving ethical decisions; what one sees as an ethical action varies as one’s frame of reference varies. This study reports the results of a survey measuring how acceptable accounting students find some common forms of academic cheating behaviors, and investigates whether the ratings are influenced by the level of a student’s EOC. This study also investigates the impact of student gender on EOC results. Survey results from 172 undergraduate accounting majors indicate that the EOC is a significant factor in student beliefs about cheating and that the EOC impact exists separately from gender effects.
