CPE Session 10: Saturday, August 2, 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Publishing Case Studies:
How Reviewers and Editors Evaluate and Select the Best

(Accounting – Intermediate)

Description/Objectives:
The purpose of this case writing workshop is to provide new and experienced case writers with information about how journal editors and reviewers evaluate cases for publication. Presenters will focus on: (1) what editors and reviewers look for in good accounting cases; (2) what potential authors should know about good accounting cases; (3) types of publishable cases.

Seminar leader will be Eldon Gardner (Associate Editor, Accounting Perspectives, and formerly Editor, The Journal of Accounting Case Research, 1992-2007). Among the questions to be addressed by Dr. Gardner and other workshop panelists (all experienced case reviewers) will be:

  1. What is a good case?
  2. How do you write a good case?
  3. Decision focused versus discussion focused cases.
  4. The reviewing process.
  5. Using cases effectively and how that affects publication.

Time will be made available for seminar panelists to help individual participants.

To enhance the practical application of this workshop the session will focus on three perspectives: the editor, the reviewer and the user. With the advice of these three groups, the case writer should be able to see what needs to be done to prepare a good manuscript.

Advance Preparation:
Suggested advance preparation would involve obtaining an issue of The Journal of Accounting Case Research or other case publication outlet for purposes of familiarization with format and editorial requirements.

Presenters:
J. Efrim Boritz, Editor, Accounting Perspectives and University of Waterloo
Eldon Gardner, Associate Editor, Accounting Perspectives and University of Lethbridge
Michael Krause, University of Indianapolis
