CPE Session 29: Sunday, August 3, 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

How to Incorporate Experiential Learning
in every course using Dee Fink's
"Paradigm of Significant Learning"

(Accounting – Basic)

Description/Objectives:
Experiential learning can involve more resources, time, and coordination than a typical faculty member is willing or able to contribute. Thus, for experiential learning to take place, less imposing types of learning experiences must be developed. This is where L. Dee Fink’s "paradigm of significant learning" resolves this problem: his paradigm provides an almost seamless way to incorporate experiential learning in every class.

According to L. Dee Fink, there are six dimensions of interactive learning. In this session, you will be have an opportunity to interact with peers, discuss new learning goals, and develop ways to incorporate experiential learning in every class. Such knowledge will be easily transferable from the session to your institution.

This seminar links directly to AACSB's mission to advance student learning (Standard 15). You will learn:

  • Why we need to pursue a better model of learning
  • L. Dee Fink’s taxonomy of significant learning which integrates six dimensions of student learning, and why it works
  • How to redesign your classes to formulate appropriate learning goals in the six dimensions
  • How to develop learning experiences to incorporate in every class

Advance Preparation:
Participants should bring a course syllabus with them that they would like to revise.

Presenters:
David Dennis, Otterbein College
Marsha Huber, Otterbein College
