Making Accounting Relevant to
Lean Enterprises – Part 2: Accounting Practices

Description/Objectives:
Objectives: Provide an understanding of how accounting can provide relevant information to support lean enterprises. Provide guidelines and resources for teaching lean accounting (LA) concepts.

Workshop includes:

  1. Introduction to LA methods and how they address deficiencies of traditional standard costing in lean environments. Demonstration of accountants as part of the "lean team," providing cell, value stream and enterprise-wide performance measures that improves decision-making.

  2. Examples of firms that have transitioned from traditional to LA methods. Discussion of the challenges in changing accounting systems: lack of top management support, lack of understanding, resistance to change, elimination of standards and variances, and concerns over satisfying external auditors.

  3. Discussion of educational objectives that provide students with an understanding of lean principles and appropriate methods to account for lean initiatives, including sample syllabi and teaching resources.

Prerequisites:
Moderate understanding of lean principles or participation in Part 1 of this workshop series.

NOTE: Parts 1 and 2 of this workshop series are distinct sessions. You may attend either one or both. Part 1 provides a foundation in lean principles; Part 2 concentrates on accounting practices for the lean enterprise.
