CPE Session 07

IFRS-Based Accounting Education

Presented By:

Denise Probert, Kaplan Schweser

Darina Maria Saxunova, University of Comenius, Bratislava (at this moment in Edgewood College, Madison, USA)

Description: The adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will change accounting education as we know it. The overwhelming attendance at IFRS sessions conducted at the 2008 AAA national conference was an indication of professors’ interests and concerns about the current accounting curriculum which is mostly void of IFRS. A recent American Accounting Association and KPMG, LLP survey found that very few universities have adopted a strategy to include IFRS in their accounting programs. The study also suggested that university administrators do not fully understand the impact the adoption of IFRS will have on the accounting curriculum making it difficult for them to lend the appropriate support. This session will present to the audience possible implementation strategies. These strategies will consider gaining administrative support and developing pedagogically-sound curriculum suggestions. Accounting professors will leave this training session with innovative ideas for implementation and confidence that they can teach the new “principles-based” curriculum.
