8:00 AM-9:40 AM Take Your Accounting Syllabus to a Whole New Level by Creating an Interactive Class Assignments Schedule by Rick Lillie
(Computer Science, Overview - 2 CH)
Teaching net-generation students is a challenging experience. During this session, you will use technology to create course materials and learning activities that engage the learning preferences of your net-generation students. This session will show you how to use Web 2.0 technology tools to create and share a student-centered, interactive Class Assignments Schedule that will take your course syllabus to a whole new level. Bring your laptop computer. If you have a headset/microphone and webcam, bring them with you. During the session, you will explore features of technology tools such as CMaps, Google Docs and Spreadsheets, MindManager, Mindomo, SightSpeed, Skype, TokBox, VoiceThread, VARK, and Yugma. Once you see what the technology tools can do, you will decide how to use them when designing course materials and learning experiences for your accounting courses.
8:00 AM-9:40 AM Synchronous Online Delivery for the Skeptical Accounting Professor by Kristine Parsons, Daniel E. Fox, and Victoria Kaskey
(Computer Science, Overview - 2 CH)
Many accounting professors reject the notion that accounting concepts can be effectively taught in an online format. Instead, they contend that teaching certain topics in accounting can only be effectively taught in a traditional classroom setting. This argument had some merits five years ago when the technology for teaching an online accounting course was limited to “asynchronous” delivery. As a result of changes in technology an online accounting course can now be effectively delivered in a live, “synchronous” setting. Consequently, many of the teaching methods used in a traditional accounting classroom, can now be seamlessly accomplished in an online classroom. This session will focus on how to deliver various accounting concepts in a live online setting using Wimba Classroom. The focus will be on the following delivery tools such as electronic tablets, desktop sharing, breakout rooms, and online office hours.
9:40 AM-10:20 AM Refreshment Break
10:20 AM-Noon Second Life and Twitter by Steven Hornik
(Computer Science, Overview - 2 CH)
During this session we will explore two very different tools for enhancing your contact and communication with your students and their engagement with the accounting content of your course. During the session you will explore Twitter as a means of staying connected with your students, and examine the many new useful applications to help you get more out of your Tweets. This session will also allow you to explore Second Life (contingent on your laptop and wireless internet in the room), to see the many possibilities of bringing 3-D virtual environments into your classes.
10:20 AM-Noon Using Camtasia Videos to Integrate Technology into Accounting Courses by Warren Bostrom and Mary Jepperson
(Computer Science, Overview - 2 CH)
As accounting faculty, we know we need to be using Excel and other technology in our accounting courses. But how can we effectively do so when our students have varying skill levels, when we don’t have access to a computer lab, or when we don’t have strong technology skills ourselves? On occasion, it is helpful to provide out-of-class media-based resources to our students that they can watch any time of the day. How can we do that efficiently? One solution is to use Camtasia videos, a software product that makes creating demonstration videos easy. A Camtasia video records on-screen movements, such as how to complete an Excel spreadsheet, and with the use of a microphone records audio instruction. The video can be uploaded to the Internet and posted on faculty web pages, Blackboard, Moodle, or other course management systems. In this hands-on learning session, participants will learn how to easily create, edit, and produce Camtasia videos. Participants will also receive a variety of ideas regarding how they could use these videos throughout the accounting curriculum.
NOON-1:00 PM Lunch on Your Own
1:00 PM-4:30 PM Preparing for Class CPE by CTLA Faculty
(Specialized Knowledge and Applications, Update - 3.5 CH)
Participants will customize their own course materials, i.e., syllabus, course calendar, and exams for a course of their choice. Participants should bring their laptop, course description, textbook, old course materials, and school calendar. Session will provide a review of best practices and hands-on mentoring by experienced faculty in a small group setting.
