Seeds of InnovationSeeds of Innovation
The theme for the 2012 AAA Annual Meeting is "Seeds of Innovation." This theme focuses on the broad need for greater innovation in accounting scholarship. The hope is to engage all members in a conversation about how better to enhance the discipline as a whole in terms of intellectual vitality. While much of the format for the 2012 meeting will be similar to recent AAA annual meetings, it is expected that an important component will focus on new developments in related fields as well as new means for educating the students entrusted to us. The aspiration for the 2012 AAA Annual Meeting is to provide an exemplary resource for members to gain new knowledge and develop their long-term scholarly interests.

On August 4–8, 2012, the American Accounting Association (AAA) will hold its Annual Meeting at the Gaylord National Hotel in Washington, DC.

DC Shuttle Service (run by Chariots for Hire) — Sponsored by AAA — THIS YEAR ONLY — the AAA has made arrangements for the following complimentary service:

  • Available ONLY to guests of AAA annual meeting attendees
  • Departs the hotel every 15 minutes from 9:00am–8:45pm Sunday, Monday and Tuesday only (8/5–8/7) — other days will be at participants own expense
  • Stops at Union Station (walking distance of the Capitol and the Museums on the Mall as well as the Metro (red line) and the Old Post Office Pavilion (close to the White House and the Metro as well)
  • Available First come/First Serve
  • Must be scheduled through the Chariots for Hire Tour Desk in the Gaylord Lobby
  • Voucher required to board shuttle

AAA Service ProjectWhat is the AAA Service Project?
This year we are excited to partner with The Backpack Project, Inc. as part of the "Seeds of Innovation" at the Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. The Backpack Project is a nonprofit organization that provides school supplies to children in 3rd through 6th grade from underserved communities in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. New for this year, each backpack will include a journal and students may participate in a biweekly journaling workshop, encouraging creative writing and reading. The Backpack Project also provides a year-long mentoring program that matches an adult volunteer with a student at the school. As part of our meeting, we are each provided with the opportunity to help these youngsters prepare for success in the new school year.

How can I get involved?
The estimated cost to create a backpack for one student is just $35.00. You can bring supplies or a filled backpack with you to the Annual Meeting, or you are welcome to make a monetary donation in any amount. Click here to donate securely online. All monies donated will be used to purchase school supplies. We also invite you to help stuff backpacks with the school supplies while you are at the Annual Meeting. Ever wonder if your students will remember what you teach them? Ever worry about finding better ways to communicate difficult accounting concepts? If so, please join us as we consider ways to help our students think and learn more quickly.

Dan Roam has helped leaders at Microsoft, Google, Wal-Mart, Boeing, and the United State Senate solve complex problems through Visual Thinking. During the evening, he will show us how drawing pictures can help our students learn about accounting. So, come, ready to eat, network, listen and DRAW.
