Submit a Proposal
Submit your proposals by 11:59 pm EDT March 30, 2012 for the American Accounting Association's Fifth Annual Conference on Teaching and Learning in Accounting (CTLA) to be held August 4-5, as part of the AAA Annual Meeting (August 4-8) in Washington, D.C. Your proposals will be peer-reviewed and you will be notified by April 20, 2012 if you are selected to be one the presenters.

Note: For tracking purposes, you will need to create a user ID and password during the submission process. You will need this information to update and/or access the status of your submission. This user ID and password does not need to match your AAA login, and will not grant access to AAA member services (i.e., registration, dues renewal, etc.).
The CTLA is designed for experienced and new faculty looking for opportunities to refine their teaching talents and perfect their craft in teaching accounting. The conference surrounds the AAA Annual Meeting to offer teaching-oriented CPE and an Insider's Guide — a kind of "road map" — to sessions on teaching- and curriculum-related topics throughout the AAA Annual Meeting program. A concluding "What's Next?" session on Wednesday at the end of the Annual Meeting provides a chance for reflection on learning across the meeting, and making recommendations for future Conferences on Teaching and Learning in Accounting.
While submissions are welcome in all interest areas, submissions are particularly encouraged for:
- Integration of Cutting-edge Technology Practices into Existing Accounting Courses
- Tips and Techniques for Online Teaching
- Ethics in the Classroom and Profession
- Strategies to Increase Student Retention
- Assessment/Student Learning Outcomes
- Team-based Learning
- Tools and Techniques for Maintaining Academic Rigor in Accounting Courses.
- Improving Critical Thinking Skills
- Increasing Student Engagement
Call for Submissions are being solicited for the following sessions (you are encouraged to submit for more than one session:
Effective Teaching Practices Forum
Description: Participants will share a teaching idea in a poster session. The poster will display a novel teaching tip or assignment for a course currently taught. Faculty should also be ready to discuss how to use this tip or assignment one-on-one with conference participants at both the ETP session and the CTLA reception on Saturday, August 4.
Proposal should include: Course name, teaching tip or assignment idea, and a brief statement about why you believe this is a novel approach.
Craft of Teaching Accounting Sessions
Description: Multiple 50 minute concurrent breakout sessions Saturday afternoon featuring topics like:
- teaching large classes
- experiential learning
- getting students engaged
- getting classes off to a good start
- teaching online
- technology supported learning
(Session schedule will be created based on submissions and the number of conference registrants to keep these breakouts small and hands-on.)
Proposal should include: A short description of the proposed session topic and learning outcome. Preferred format for session: panel, active learning, lecture, etc. Please note in your proposal if an internet connection or other A/V equipment is required.
Teaching and Technology Roundtables
Description: Share your favorite teaching or technology tip in ten minutes or less at roundtables. During a 50 minute session Saturday afternoon, you will present your tip three times. This session is high energy and lots of fun!
Proposal should include: A short description of the proposed teaching or technology tip, the course or courses it is used in, and why it is so effective.
Teaching Strategies for Today and Tomorrow
Description: 100 minute concurrent sessions Sunday morning on in-depth teaching strategies or effectively using technology to teach/learn accounting. Session topics could include any of the topics mentioned above. Sessions should actively involve participants in hands-on learning. Participants will be at roundtables.
Proposal should include: A short description of the proposed session topic and its learning outcome, an agenda for the 100 minute timeframe, and a description of how this session will be hands-on learning. Please note in your proposal if an internet connection or other A/V equipment is required.
