The American Taxation Association (ATA) was founded in 1974 and joined the American Accounting Association (AAA) in 1978 as the Tax Section of the AAA. Memberships and student memberships are open to persons with an interest in tax education and research. Honorary memberships are also available to long-term members that have retired. In addition to members' dues the ATA is supported by many generous sponsors.

Please see the ATA objectives to learn more about our goals. Under the guidance of President Tim Rupert, the ATA's committees provide a wide variety of services to the ATA membership. Please see the Committees page for ways to get involved.

News & Announcements

The 2012-2013 Call for Officers and Trustees is available. Please take the time to think about who you would like to see in ATA leadership positions. These individuals will influence the activities of the ATA in the coming years.

A new webmaster for the ATA will be needed, starting September 1, 2012. If you are technically proficient and have an interest in design you're encouraged to send an email to ATAwebmaster@AAAhq.org and express your interest.

The Internal Revenue Service will hold its 2012 Research Conference in June or July in Washington, D.C. The exact date and location will be announced at a future date, at http://www.irs.gov/taxstats/bustaxstats/article/0,,id=227443,00.html.

A preliminary program, including hotel information, for the 2012 ATA Midyear Meeting is now available on the meeting webpage.

The 2012 KPMG/ATA Doctoral Consortium will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2012. KPMG has once again generously funded the Consortium, so that PhD students wishing to attend will have their hotel and meal costs fully funded. Please see the Consortium Announcement for more information and follow the directions on the Application Form if you are interested in attending. Additional information will be posted at this link as it becomes available.

The Teaching Resource committee is sponsoring a presentation session at the 2012 ATA Mid-Year Meeting in New Orleans. Complete information may be found in the call for submissions.

The AICPA is presenting its annual AICPA National Tax Conference, this November 6-8, 2011, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. This conference is an excellent opportunity for faculty and students to come and learn about national tax issues and network with those already in the profession. The agenda includes an IRS, Emerging Tax Leader, and Corporate/Business tracks.  Speakers include IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman, along with Former Senator John Breaux. The ATA Trustees have approved the creation of the ATA Memorial Fund fbo Doctoral Education. We grieve the loss of Marty Escoffier, and this general memorial fund will permit ATA members to donate in his memory now and in memory of other losses in the future. (posted March 19, 2010)

The AAA has requested that the ATA website not provide conference-related files for more than 60 days after the close of the event. Conference programs are still available; if there is a paper or presentation you would like a copy of then please contact the authors.
