Gender Issues and Worklife Balance Newsletter

Fall 2005 Edition

GIWB Section Newsletter, Fall 2005

Newsletter Editor: L. Murphy Smith

Letter from the Section President:

Hope everyone has had a successful, exciting fall semester!

I hated missing the AAA meeting in August, but I recently took a new position and agreed to teach a class in the 2nd half of the summer. Last spring, I had the pleasure of attending the AAA Council Meeting in Atlanta, in Murphy’s stead, as he had another commitment.  What a learning experience!

Any chance that we get to participate in our profession and learn more about it, I believe that we should embrace.  I have found it very informative and interesting learning about the inner-workings of the AAA, and at the Council Meeting I also learned about other current events and challenges facing our profession and the accounting discipline in general.  I have been able to learn so much because of membership and involvement in our section of the AAA.

That being said, I highly recommend getting involved!

Kimberly Charron is our National Meeting Coordinator.  Please see her note in this newsletter concerning submission of Gender and/or Worklife Balance research to the annual AAA meeting.  Please note also that submission deadline for papers for the meeting is January 10, 2006.  Additional information about submission can be found at http://aaahq.org/AM2006/call2006.htm

On a final note for this message, I thank Ellen Cook and Murphy Smith for all their help and counsel and for the opportunities that have been presented to me through involvement in our section.  The participation and involvement of each of our members serves to strengthen both our section and our profession.

Call for Papers and Volunteers for the Annual Meeting:

The Annual Meeting is scheduled for August 6 through 10, 2006 in Washington, D.C.  Last year we had 10 papers submitted for review and I am hopeful that this year we will meet or beat that number.  I encourage everyone doing research in this area to submit a paper for presentation.  If anyone is working with a Ph.D. student doing Gender and/or Worklife Balance research, please encourage them to submit their paper to the New Scholar Session as well.  I will also be looking for volunteers to review papers, serve as discussants and moderators, as well as mentors for any new scholars.  Please visit the AAA website (http://aaahq.org/AM2006/call2006.htm) to submit your paper or volunteer.
