ABSTRACT:

In many organizations, data entry is an occasional task performed by accounting staff rather than full-time data entry personnel. The purpose of this study was to test whether differences in screen design (single or multiple transaction) and feedback type (visual, audio, or a combination of visual and audio) are associated with differences in user productivity and satisfaction. In a laboratory experiment, 97 subjects entered journal entries into one of six general ledger systems corresponding to all combinations of screen layout and feedback type. Empirical results were mixed. Productivity and satisfaction did not vary between screen layouts. Audio feedback yielded higher productivity than either visual or combined visual/audio feedback. However, user satisfaction was greatest for visual feedback.
