ABSTRACT:

Recently, Bain et al. (2002) pointed out the critical importance of the transaction processing cycles and internal control topics to an undergraduate Accounting Information Systems (AIS) course. The purpose of the current article is to provide students with a working understanding of the Revenue Cycle and the key related documents. Additionally, students are encouraged during the in-class role-play to consider risk exposures, internal controls and technological opportunities to improve business processes.

In addition to the case material, we conducted a study to examine the effects of the in-class role-play on students understanding of the revenue cycle. Results from a pre/post test reflect a significant increase in the level of understanding of the revenue cycle after performing the in-class role-play and that the students agreed that the in-class role-play was enjoyable and increased their understanding of the revenue cycle.
