A Message from the Chair

Kevin D. Stocks,
Brigham Young University

What a year! Does life continue to get busier or does it just seem that way? I hope that each of you has enjoyed a productive and enjoyable spring.

Our Section was well represented in all of the AAA Regional meetings. I want to express appreciation to the following members for their work representing the T&C Section: Nancy E. Coulmas from Bloomsburg University in the Mid-Atlantic Region; Michael F. Foran (Wichita State University) in the Midwest Region: W. David Albrecht (Bowling Green University) in the Ohio Region, Gail Sergenian (Suffolk University) in the Northeast Region, Ronald L. Campbell (North Carolina A&T State University) in the Southeast Region; Sandra T. Welch (University of Texas at San Antonio) in the Southwest Region; and Barbara Croteau (Santa Rosa Junior College) in the Western Region. They each did a great job and deserve our thanks.

The numerous committees of the Section continue their work. I look forward to their reports at our annual business meeting. A major topic to consider at the business meeting is a proposed new set of by-laws for the Section. On searching the records, I found that the only by-laws that exist on paper were those originally drafted when the Section was organized. Many of the practices of the Section differ from those actually listed in the by-laws, including the name of the Section. I asked four of our recent past-presidents (Richard Baker (Chair), David Stout, Billie Cunningham, and Fred Neumann) to review and propose an updated set of by-laws. They have provided the draft found in this newsletter. I encourage you to review this draft and provide me any feedback prior to a formal vote at the annual business meeting.

Last year we asked a committee to make recommendations on having a midyear meeting or sponsoring a breakfast of lunch meeting at the annual meeting. Following their recommendation, we have scheduled a T&C Section Breakfast on Tuesday morning, August 17. For those who register for the meeting, I encourage you to join us at the T&C Breakfast. We will not have a formal speaker at the Breakfast, but we do plan to give some awards and make some recognitions.

Committees are being organized for this coming year. If you are interested in participating on any particular committee or if you simply want to be involved, please send me a message. My email is Kevin_Stocks@byu.edu and my phone is 801-378-4613.
