A Message from the ChairDear Fellow T&C Section Members: I am very proud to be your chair of the T&C Section for 2001-2002. I have been active in the section for a long time and believe strongly in its goals and objectives. In my one, short year as chair we hope to continue things we have been doing for a long time and add a few, new wrinkles. My major interest is bringing section members together. Many of us came to higher education because we wanted to teach. The T&C Section can help those of us who want to discuss teaching have an opportunity to do so. The T&C Section has placed a great deal of emphasis on regional meetings, places where section members can see and meet each other at locations not far from their homes. We hope to sponsor receptions on Thursday nights at as many regional meetings as possible. The receptions will be open to Section members only. At several regional meetings we will run CPE sessions with reduced charges to Section members. We also hope to schedule not only paper presentations but panel discussions where individuals can share their thoughts on important pedagogical and curriculum issues. In addition, we will be giving a $250 award to the best manuscript submitted through the T&C Section. Since we will be announcing the awards at a session for the entire meeting we hope it will highlight the importance of teaching and curriculum topics. We opened up participation on section committees to the entire section membership last spring by calling for volunteers. Many people did volunteer and we were able to place most on committees. Everyone can easily access Committee reports on the T&C website. We have several new committees. First, we set up a Premeeting Seminar Committee (Julia Karcher and Richard Ott, Co-Chairs) to select topics for CPE sessions before the Annual Meeting. T&C Section members can enroll in any of these sessions at a special, nominee fee. Second, we have an Innovative Teaching Practices Committee (Catherine Usoff, Chair). The Committee will identify innovative practices going on in several courses and make the information available on our website. Third, we have an Assessment Committee (Thomas Calderon and Brian Patrick Green, Co-Chairs) who are going to identify the best practices in assessment and publish a monograph that will be made available to Section members. Fourth, we established an International Committee (Bobbe Barnes, Chair) to consider how international accounting is handled in the curriculum. We also have several continuing committees: Annual Meeting Program Committee (Jeffrey McMillan, Chair). In response to Jeff's call, numerous section members will be participating in manuscript reviews; Shares Experiences Committee (Paul Solomon, Chair) will continue to identify eminent senior faculty in each region who will participate in a session at a regional meeting sharing their insights and wisdom; Pedagogy Committee (Susan Wolcott, Chair) will identify best practices for implementing the AICPA Core Competencies; Research Committee (Dennis Bline, Chair) will identify relevant research in specific areas, particularly from outside the accounting education literature, and make the information available on the Section website; Service Learning Committee (Alfred Michenzi, Chair) will accumulate information on best practices in this important area and provide it on our website. Last year we held a reception prior to the Annual Meeting. We plan to continue this practice, again with the goal of bringing section members together. With the Premeeting Seminar committee's help, we will provide some outstanding CPE sessions with T&C members able to attend at greatly reduced fees. Section members responded quite positively to the sessions last year in Atlanta. We also welcome hearing from you and sharing your ideas of ways we can serve our membership better. Please feel free to contact me by email (bschwart@iusb.edu), telephone or regular mail. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you. Sincerely, |
