The Accounting Educator

The Newsletter of the Teaching and Curriculum Section
American Accounting Association

Volume V, No. 2 [Winter, 1996]

A Message from the Chair, Kent St. Pierre, University of Delaware

I hope this letter finds all of you refreshed from your break and ready to tackle a new semester. I would like to use this column to keep you up to date on activities involving the section and accounting education in general, so feel free to drop me a note if there are items you think would be of interest to our membership. You will find a copy of the report from the "Best and Brightest” committee included in this mailing. I would like to personally thank the committee members for their efforts on behalf of the section and hope you take the time to study their findings. There may be disagreement with some of the results, but the information presented should initiate further discussion and examination of some of our programs and policies.

The Federation of Schools of Accountancy recently issued a collection of essays on "Change in Accounting Education: A Research Blueprint." Fifteen individuals were asked to write papers primarily concerned with graduate education in accounting and the 150 hour movement. The essays covered ideas on how to implement changes in accounting education, criticisms and support of the 150 hour mandate, assessing outcomes of graduate programs, research topics in this area, and improving thinking and communication skills. If you are searching for research topics or simply interested in differing opinions on some of these issues, the essays may prove beneficial. The papers will be reprinted in an issue of the Journal of Accounting Education later this year if you are not able to obtain a copy of the FSA publication.

Those of you using cases in your classroom or considering the use of cases should be pleased with what I consider a very positive change in the mainstream accounting. education journals. It appears that the number of accounting faculty interested in writing cases, which is a very difficult task, has increased to the point where the journals are publishing an increasing supply of excellent cases for classroom use. At a time when “thinking” in the classroom is no longer considered a novel idea, the availability of cases can enhance our efforts to make our class time truly beneficial.

I would like to ask that all of our current members make an effort to increase our membership numbers by promoting the section to your colleagues. It is apparent to all involved that the Sections are truly the "grass roots” of the AAA and offer the opportunity to change and shape the organization. Our ability to do this, however, is directly related to the size of our section. We need your help with your own faculty while we continue to push the benefits and importance of the section at the regional and national meetings.

Finally, I would again remind you to note the dates of your regional meetings which are included in this newsletter. Your attendance and participation are critical to the success of the regions, which in turn are critical to the success of the national organization. Take care and have a productive semester!
