Midwest Regional Meeting

The Midwest Regional Meeting was held at The Hyatt Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri, on April 18-20, 1996. A major portion of both the CPE workshops and the program was devoted to T&C issues. The overall theme of the meeting was "Reengineering Accounting Education."

On Friday, Anita Feller and David Ziebart presented plenary sessions on the Project Discovery curriculum they have been using at the University of Illinois. Anita presented a session entitled "Project Discovery: Overview of Innovations in Introductory Accounting" and David presented "Project Discovery: Overview of Financial Accounting (Jr./Sr. Level) Curriculum." Three other plenary sessions held on Friday included "Overview & Critique of the New Curriculum at Arizona State University," presented by Patrick McKinzie (Arizona State University); "Using the Internet for Education, Research, & Business," presented by Meg Dwyer (U. Of Wisconsin-Eau Claire); and a presentation of T&C Curriculum Committee Report entitled "Promoting & Evaluating Effective Teaching" by Thomas Calderon (U. Of Akron), Alex Gabbin (James Madison University), and Brian Green (U. Of Michigan-Dearborn). On Saturday, Rick Flaherty, Director of the AECC, presented a plenary session on "Where to From Here?"

At the concurrent sessions, 14 of the 54 paper presentations focused on T&C issues. Papers presented included "Quality Multiple-Choice Test Questions: An Analysis of Auditing Testbanks," James Hansen (North Dakota State University) and Lee Dexter (Moorhead State University); "Effect of Testing Frequency on Introductory Accounting Students - An Experiment," Sandra Byrd, David Byrd, and Vivian Hagar (all from Southwest Missouri State University); "Examination Question Types: An Analysis of Effects in the Principles of Accounting Course," James Weisel, Leon Korte, and Robert Rosacker (all from University of South Dakota); "Team Learning: An Application for the Advanced Financial Accounting Course," Gary Freeman (The University of Tulsa); "Cooperative Learning: A Landmark Empirical Study in Accounting Principles - Financial," Robert Holtfreter (Central Washington University); "The Effects of Reading Level and Similar Attributes of Professional Pronouncements on Contribution of Applied Accounting Research," David Ziebart (U. Of Illinois); "Employer Preferences Towards Skills of Applicants for Staff Accounting Positions," David Cornell and Raj Arora (both from University of Missouri-Kansas City); "New Directions for the Accounting Curriculum: Developing a Managerial Focus," Lola Dudley and Frank Clark (both from Eastern Illinois University; "What CPA Recruiters Want Included in the 150 Credit Hour Accounting Curriculum," Judith Sage (U. Of Illinois-Chicago) and Lloyd Sage (Butler University); "An Empirical Analysis and Proposed Model Development for TQM in Accounting Education" LuAnn Bean (Pittsburgh State University); "High School Students' Perceptions About Accounting and a Career in Accounting: Can These Perceptions Be Changed," Tom Lewis (Creighton University); "Use of a Comprehensive Real-World Global Case Study to Enhance Student Learning in Advanced Accounting," Robert Wuerth (University of Southern Indiana); "Designing and Implementing an Accounting Assessment Program," James Trebby, Michael Akers, and Don Giacomino (all from Marquette University); and "Expanding the Perspective of Cost Variance Analysis to Include the Concepts of Cost Drivers Statistical Variation and System Characteristics," James Martin (University of South Florida).
