Message From the Chair

The year 2001 always had significance for me due to the movie, “2001, A Space Odyssey.” Remember? It’s the movie where HAL, the computer, takes over. Sometimes it feels that way as we try to integrate all the new technology into our accounting classes and colleges. As we begin the year 2001, I rejoice that HAL does not rule and that the personal touch of teaching still matters.

For example, the Two-Year College Section recognizes professional excellence and good teaching annually with two awards. If you know of outstanding faculty, consider nominating them for either the Accounting Educator of the Year or the Lifetime Achievement in Accounting Education at Two-Year Colleges award. We will recognize these distinguished award winners at our Two-Year College Section luncheon at AAA’s Annual Meeting in Atlanta, August 12–15.

New years always start with resolutions and good intentions. I need your help with one that involves the personal touch of teaching accounting at two-year colleges. Whether you are new to teaching accounting or have enjoyed it for many years, there is an opportunity for us to forge a better future for our students. This year, the Institute of Management Accountants has awarded a Faculty Enhancement Grant to us to develop two workshops to encourage teaching excellence at two-year colleges. The workshops will be held in conjunction with the IMA’s national conference, June 17–20, in New Orleans and the AAA’s Annual Meeting in Atlanta in August. If you would like to be involved, email me ASAP! susancrosson@sfcc.net. Participation will be limited. For more details, read the article included in this newsletter on the workshops.

Thank you for being a member of the Two-Year College Section of AAA. I look forward to your participation in these important times for accounting education.
