1. President Stacy Kovar called the meeting to order.
2. Minutes of October 21 business meeting were approved.
3. Raquel Alexander provided an overview of the ABO section activities at the AAA conference. Submissions are up and diverse in topic and method. A potential concern raised by ABO members is the appropriateness of archival/empirical paper submitted. Debate: (1) ABO is methodology based and as so, only accept behavioral/experimental research or (2) Any method is appropriate if about ABO and utilizes psychology-based theory. Executive committee seems to favor (2). Raquel recommends official guidance for ABO liaison to AAA next year so that the decision about paper appropriateness is made consistently.
4. 2006 Mid-year Meeting Update
Doctoral Consortium. In absence of sponsorship ($7,500), ABO covers cost. Executive committee approved section paying the cost for (3) nights lodging for doctoral students (double occupancy). Announcement to students for first 20 students to register for consortium. Friendly amendment to publicize 20 but allow up to 25. Registration by students should include faculty member nomination as future behavioral researcher. Cindy Blanthorne will coordinate student registration.
Stacy Kovar reported (on behalf of Treasurer Anne Magro) cash balance is up which is consistent with all sections and helps to even out fluctuations. ABO has 969 full members and 87 associate members.
Submissions are up and new format of each session (2) papers with discussants means fewer papers can be presented.
Nominating Committee selection at mid-year to correct error in prior years.
5. 2007 Mid-year Meeting Update.
Tim Louwers reported that he is expecting a proposal from the public interest section regarding a joint mid-year meeting. Details are that the PI section would add about 20 incremental attendees and the PI section would run concurrent sessions. Will joint meeting cause more work for ABO organizers? Benefits include recruiting and room guarantees. No decision is required by ABO at this time.
A motion to poll ABO membership about joint PI meeting passed. Friendly amendment by Stacy Kovar to review PI proposal for details before polling membership.
6. 2008 Mid-year Meeting - possible sites selected: Boston, Minneapolis and Nashville.
7. Publications issues. A motion passed to increase library subscription rates to $150 for print, $150 for electronic and $175 for both.
A motion passed to include member opinion about online versus print access for ABO members in poll of section members.
The executive committee of the ABO previously passed a motion to publish BRIA twice each year. Bryan Church voiced concern over the current volume of submissions and the ability to fill two issues each year. Stacy Kovar reminded the committee that the motion to go from one issue to two each year had already passed.
A motion passed to survey the membership about their views on going to two issues of BRIA.
A search for a new BRIA editor will begin a year from now
BRIA 2008, 20th anniversary special issue. Discussion of having 2008 be first year with two issues in coordination with the anniversary. A suggestion of appointment a special editor, perhaps the first editor of BRIA, as editor of the anniversary issue.
8. Section bylaws – responsibility of the Vice President. A motion to have section bylaws updated and reviewed by Vice President was passed.
9. Sean Peffer is member of AAA recruiting and has agreed to report back to ABO.
