Future Meeting
2008
Late April/Early May
Host: University of Nevada Reno
Northern California – Bay Area
Theme: Accounting for Sustainability
The theme for the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Western Region is Accounting for Sustainability. Sustainability, defined as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs," requires "practical and robust" accounting measures and processes to identify and account for factors impacting sustainability. Growing awareness of the need to preserve the environment, conserve limited resources, and engage in socially responsible business practices is rapidly growing. The lack of generally accepted accounting guidelines for sustainability, however, greatly inhibits the ability of businesses, organizations, and governments to appropriately consider costs and effects when making decisions and allocating resources. This is an exciting new area for research and discussion and spans all areas of accounting research. We hope you will join us in 2008.
