2008–2009 AAA COMMITTEES
NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE
(Standing Committee of the Association)
Charge:
Carry out all necessary activities to precede the Association's annual election. Specifically:
- Select a list of nominees to the applicable AAA offices for election by the membership in Spring 2009, and carry out other duties specified in the By-Laws and Policy and Procedures Manual.
- Provide a progress report to the Executive Committee liaison in time to be included in the agenda book for each Executive Committee meeting.
Membership
The Nominations Committee is made up of the three most recent Past Presidents willing and able to serve and four members elected by the Council. The four elected members need not be members of the Council, and may not be current members of the Executive Committee. The Committee on Nominations is chaired by the most senior, in service, of the Past Presidents serving. The Nominations Committee nominates candidates for all of the elective offices of the Association and members at large of the Council.
Members of the Nominations Committee are not eligible for nomination, except that members of the Nominations Committee who are already members of the Council may continue in that capacity (committee membership is detailed in the AAA By-Laws Section VII-3).
Meeting
A meeting of the Committee on Nominations is scheduled by the Chair before the end of December. AAA staff assists the Chair in coordination of the meeting, scheduling, and location.
Responsibilities
- Chair initiates scheduling of the meeting of the Committee on Nominations no later than September (meeting should be scheduled to occur before December 31).
- A link to the committee's charge, list of past Executive Committee members, and some association service history as available will be provided to Chair by AAA staff to be shared with members of the Committee.
- A call for nominations will be included in the Summer and Fall issues of Accounting Education News, in mass emails to AAA members, and on the AAA website. Notice will include details of the provision for additions to the slate of nominees by petition.
- Chair will ensure that committee members are knowledgeable about the current strategic planning efforts of the Executive Committee, and consider implications for development of the slate of nominees.
- Committee will share vision statement and the strategic planning documents outlining current initiatives with potential nominees, and ascertain that candidates are comfortable leading and supporting the strategic planning process of the Association if elected to serve.
- Chair will notify the Executive Director of the slate of nominees as soon as it is confirmed.
- Per the By-Laws, once finalized by the Nominations Committee, the list of nominees must be published/distributed approximately ninety (90) days prior to the beginning of the election (via email and AAA website). Additional nominations may be made by a petition signed by not less than one hundred (100) members of the Association submitted to the Executive Director at least forty-five (45) days prior to the beginning of the election. Persons so nominated must previously have agreed to serve if elected. The membership of the Association shall be notified prior to the election of any nominations made by petition.
- The AAA website and a future issue of Accounting Education News will contain biographies and photos of the nominees, including any nominated by petition.
- The Chair prepares and sends a progress report twice every term-year, with deadlines of October 29th 2008 and March 4th 2009, to the Executive Committee Liaison, AAA President, and Executive Director regarding accomplishments or modifications.
