Committee Report
December 26, 2000
The 2000-2001 AAA
Nominations Committee met in Salt Lake City on December 18, 2000. Committee
members were W. Steve Albrecht, Brigham Young University, chair; Michael A.
Diamond, University of Southern California; Donna R. Philbrick, Portland State
University; James E. Hunton, University of South Florida (the alternate who
replaced Barry Cushing because of illness); Richard P. Weber, Michigan State
University; Jan R. Williams, University of Tennessee; and Stephen A. Zeff, Rice
University. All members were present for the entire meeting.
Candidates to be
considered by the Nominations Committee were obtained through a call for
nominations placed in the Accounting Education News and on the AAA's
Home page. This call for nominations elicited numerous suggested candidates
whose names were distributed to committee members before the December 18
meeting. Prior to the meeting, committee members exchanged a series of e-mails
where candidates for the various offices and position descriptions were
distributed and discussed.
The Nominations
Committee meeting began with a discussion of the processes to be followed. A
list of nominees, list of offices for election, copies of relevant AAA bylaws
and policies and procedures, and nominating guidelines were distributed to
committee members at the beginning of the meeting. All committee members agreed
on the processes to be followed. Committee members discussed the positions to
be filled, including the duties and responsibilities of each position and the
individual characteristics and qualifications required for each position. The
Committee agreed to follow the long-standing tradition of selecting the nominee
for President-elect from among persons with previous experience on the AAA's
Executive Committee. Other factors discussed included continuity, service to
the AAA, representativeness and diversity.
The Nominations
Committee considered the President-elect position first; individuals not
receiving the final nomination were included in the list of available
candidates for other positions. This practice was followed for each position.
The voting process was as follows:
- Proceeding around the table, each
committee member nominated individuals to be considered. We continued going
around the table until all committee members had nominated everyone they wanted
or until everyone passed on further nominations.
- Once candidates were formally
nominated, the committee discussed each candidate in turn. After all Committee
members agreed that sufficient discussion had occurred, voting
proceeded.
- If there were five or more
candidates nominated, every committee member received two votes. During each
voting iteration, the half of the candidates with the fewest votes were
eliminated. As soon as the number of remaining candidates was four or less,
committee member received only one vote. The voting ceased when a single
candidate received a simple majority of votes.
The following positions
were considered: President-elect, Vice President (undesignated), Vice
President-International, Vice President-Professional; Vice
President-Finance-Elect; 2 Council (at large) positions, and
Council-International.
The Nominations
Committee has identified the following nominees for Executive Committee and
Council positions:
- President-elect: G. Peter Wilson,
Boston College
- Vice President (undesignated):
William E. (Bill) McCarthy, Michigan State
- Vice President-International: Judy
S. L. Tsui, City University of Hong Kong
- Vice-President-Professional, Sam
Vitkoski, BDO Seidman
- Vice President-Finance-Elect: Judy
D. Rayburn, University of Minnesota
- Council (at large): Ruth W. Epps,
Virginia Commonwealth Paul F. Williams, North Carolina State
- Council-International: Neil W.

We believe these

well.
