Preface

 

For over a decade, accounting educators and practitioners have been working together to change the way accountants are educated. Changes in the field have prompted practitioners to reconsider the qualifications accountants will need for success in the future. Employers of accounting graduates are calling for wide range of intellectual and interpersonal skills, as well as basic knowledge of business and accounting. They are calling especially for accounting graduates who are prepared to be lifelong learners in their practice of accounting.

Accounting educators are responding to the concerns of practitioners by exploring new approaches to curriculum, new courses and assignments, and new ways to teach accounting. Accounting education is shifting from a focus on memorizing rules and working problems to an increased emphasis on student learning. This monograph is part of this emphasis. We suggest introducing into accounting education a process of intentional learning, that is, learning with a plan, intensity and self determination while learning the practice of accounting.
