A message from the ATA trustees:
On April 16, 2007, the world suffered a tremendous loss, when 32 individuals were tragically killed on the Virginia Tech campus. As many of you know, Austin Michelle Cloyd, daughter of Bryan and Renee Cloyd was one of the victims that tragic day. Bryan, an accounting professor at Virginia Tech, has been actively involved in the ATA since receiving his PhD from Indiana University and he currently serves as the editor of JATA.
Those of us teaching at educational institutions, many of them very similar to Virginia Tech, were particularly moved by this tragedy. To honor the memory of those that lost their lives, the ATA trustees at their August 2007 board meeting unanimously approved a $1,000 annual donation for five years to The Austin Michelle Cloyd Honors Scholarship.
Austin Cloyd was passionate about social justice issues and was especially devoted to assisting children living in poverty. The Austin Michelle Cloyd Honors Scholarship was established to enable outstanding Honors students to pursue a major extra-curricular activity aimed at promoting social justice. The scholarship's goal is to encourage exceptional students to apply their intellect, energy and compassion to a cause that improves the social, economic and/or political conditions of poor and powerless people.
The scholarship includes support for a service-oriented activity, an internship, and tuition and fees. Additional information concerning the scholarship can be found at
