The Outstanding Educator Award is given to recognize "exemplary contributions in research or teaching over a sustained period of time (10 to 15 years), as evidenced by publications, educational innovations, guidance to graduate and undergraduate students, or excellence in teaching." As in prior years, the set of nominees was outstanding, forcing a very tough decision by the selection committee. Accordingly, I want to thank the other committee members Jane Mutchler and Larry Rittenberg for their work in making the difficult selection.

The recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Educator Award is Michael Gibbins, who is the Winspear Distinguished Professor of Professional Accounting and Chair of the Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems at University of Alberta. After receiving his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1976, Michael began his academic career at University of British Columbia. In 1984, Michael moved to University of Alberta and, other than several visiting appointments at University of New South Wales, has been there ever since.

Michael has a very long list of service to his universities, and professional, governmental, and academic organizations. His publications include over 35 journal articles and numerous books, book chapters, monographs and proceedings. In addition, he has taught at all academic levels and received a significant number of outstanding teaching awards. Michael Gibbins clearly meets the criteria for the Outstanding Educator Award in all areas and we take pleasure in recognizing his contributions.
