William R. Kinney Jr., the Charles and Elizabeth Protho Regents Chair and Price Waterhouse Faculty Fellow in Auditing at the University of Texas at Austin, is the 1996 recipient of the Outstanding Auditing Educator Award. Bill received his Ph.D. in 1968 from Michigan State University and joined the University of Texas in 1987 after serving on the faculties of Oklahoma State University and the Universities of Iowa and Michigan. Virtually all section members know Bill, as his contributions are as extensive as they are outstanding. Thus, cutting to the heart of the matter, the section is recognizing Bill for his many innovations and excellence in education. Over an almost 30-year period, Bill has educated numerous auditors, helped students who were to become managers to understand the roles of auditing and auditors, and has been a most prominent figure in graduate audit education. Bill recently has been working as a member of the AICPA's Elliott Committee and, in this capacity, has made salient the implications of that committee's work for education.
Bill is a past recipient of too many awards to mention here. However, this announcement would be incomplete if it were not to note that the Auditing Section previously presented the Distinguished Service Award to Bill. Indeed, Bill, Jim Loebbecke and Fred Neumann are the only persons to be recognized by the Auditing Section by receiving both awards.
Congratulations to Bill Kinney, the 1996 Outstanding Auditing Educator!
