Fifth Annual Midyear
Auditing Section Conference

The Fifth
Annual Midyear Auditing Section Conference will be held in
Atlanta, Georgia on January 1416, 1999. The meeting will
feature a keynote speech on Ethics in American Society and
its Implications for Auditing by Michael Novak (Director of
Social and Political Studies at the American Enterprise Institute
and author of numerous books, including Business as a Calling,
which explores the moral dimensions of business). The meeting will
also feature a luncheon speech by Arthur Siegel, Executive
Director of the Independence Standards Board, who will discuss the
activities of the new board. In addition to the usual great lineup
of paper sessions on research and education, Rick Antle, Mark
Dirsmith, Mike Gibbins and Dan Simunic will present end-of-millenium
reviews of four major lines of auditing research.
The meeting
will be held at the Omni Hotel at CNN Center. The room rate is

CPE Workshop: Cases on Strategic-Systems Auditing
Thursday, January 14, 1999, 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The KPMG
Foundation has made a generous grant to the Auditing Section to
defray the costs (session fees and one-night hotel accommodation)
of attending this half-day program. The focus of the workshop will
be cases prepared under the KPMG/University of Illinois Case
Development & Research Program. Strategic-Systems Auditing is
an innovative approach to auditing that provides a central role
for auditors acquisition of knowledge about the clients
business activities and business risk control. Attendees are
encouraged to read the monograph Auditing Organizations
Through a Strategic Systems Lens prior to the workshop. Copies
may be obtained free of charge by contacting Tim Bell at the
Executive Office of KPMG Peat Marwick LLP (tbell@kpmg.com).
Attendees will receive copies of cases and teaching notes. Space
is limited and will be assigned on a first-come-first-serve basis.
