Paul Solomon is the Recipient
of the American Accounting Association's
1998 Innovation in Accounting Education Award

Paul Solomon, San Jose State University, Emeritus, is the 1998 recipient of the American Accounting Association's Innovation in Accounting Education Award. Solomon received the award for his submission, "An Individual's Initiative to Champion the Directives of the Accounting Education Change Commission (AECC)."

At the center of the innovation is the Core Competency Model for the First Course in Accounting, a user-oriented, competency-based curriculum model. Since the model focuses on outcomes rather than the delivery of the first course, it can accommodate any teaching style, course approach, or textbook. Although he is credited as the principal author, Solomon received input from several hundred other faculty and professionals in the state of California to develop this competency-based approach. Initially called the California Core Competency Model when it was issued in 1995, the word "California" was removed from the model's title in 1997 to more accurately reflect its national dissemination and acceptance. To date the model has been distributed via booklet and the Internet to an estimated 5,000 faculty.

Solomon's initiative also included organizing the California Colloquium on Accounting Education, a vehicle for the implementation and assessment of the Core Competency Model, and establishing the national faculty conference, The Colloquium on Change in Accounting Education.
