CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Theme: Accounting for Sustainability, 2.0

The theme for the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Western Region builds upon last year’s successful “Accounting for Sustainability” conference. Sustainability, defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs,” requires “practical and robust” accounting measures and processes to identify and account for factors impacting sustainability. Sustainability is more than being “green”; it involves consideration of the three pillars of sustainability- economic, social, and environmental. The accounting profession has a role to play as organizations work to become more sustainable, in response to policy mandates for emission reduction standards, as economic reality requires them to use resources more efficiently, and as stakeholders demand full disclosure of an organization’s environmental and social performance. Many accounting firms have added consulting services to help organizations become more sustainable and to assist in preparing sustainability reports. For an example of how the conversation is evolving we refer you to a Deloitte White Paper HERE. There is a compelling need for research and curriculum development that spans all areas of the accounting profession as our society responds to the challenges of climate disruption and resource scarcity. We hope you will join in the conversation with us in 2009.
