Executive Summary

During the summer of 1998, we created web-based courses for the introductory financial and managerial accounting courses using the WEBCT platform and the textbook Accounting (4th edition, Prentice Hall Publishing, 1999) by Charles Horngren, Walter Harrison and Linda Bamber.

The two-course package is designed to be used in either of two ways. First, it can be used as part of a web-based, distance learning package that can be modified by the instructor, if desired. Second it can be used as an interactive study guide/textbook supplement in a traditional classroom setting.

We covered all 26 chapters of the textbook and each chapter is outlined as follows: 1) chapter objectives; 2) readiness assessment tests; 3) lecture notes; 4) discussion questions; 5) in-line exercises; 6) lecture summary; 7) homework assignments; 8) practice exams; and 9) actual exams. In addition, the WEBCT platform allows for chat rooms, bulletin boards, a course calendar and syllabus and immediate grading of examinations and quizzes.

The first three chapters of this on-line course are available for review at webct.prenhall.com/bp/bp1.html (then clicking on "ACCOUNTING" and following the instructions from there) and more can be learned about WEBCT at www.webct.com.
