Independence in Accounting Standard Setting
STANDARDS SETTING CHALLENGE
A new bill is being proposed in Congress that would create a new "Federal Oversight Board", to approve and oversee accounting principles and standards for the purposes of the federal financial regulatory agencies, and for other purposes. The House Financial Services Committee has held a hearing, and a number of organizations and individuals have written comment letters to the Committee and to their congressional representatives. This bill has the potential to have a significant impact on how accounting standards are set. So that AAA members have an opportunity to learn more about these unfolding events and contribute to the conversation, an AAACommons community has been developed where supporting materials and posted comment letters can be shared and discussed.
Join that community by clicking on the link above to go to the AAACommons community on Independence in Accounting Standard Setting under "Hot Topics" (login required).

FASB Accounting Standards Codification™
ACADEMIC ACCOUNTING ACCESS
On July 1, 2009, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) instituted a major change in the way accounting standards are organized. On that date, the FASB Accounting Standards Codification™ (FASB Codification) became the single official source of authoritative, nongovernmental U.S. generally accepted accounting principles (U.S. GAAP). After that date, only one level of authoritative U.S. GAAP will exist, other than guidance issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). All other literature will be non-authoritative.
As part of its educational mission, the Financial Accounting Foundation (FAF), the oversight and administrative body of the FASB, in a joint initiative with the American Accounting Association (AAA), will provide faculty and students in accounting programs at post-secondary academic institutions with the Professional View of the online FASB Codification.
