The Accounting, Behavior, and Organizations Section of the AAA is pleased to announce its first Doctoral Consortium. The Consortium will be held in conjunction with the annual ABO Research Conference in Portland, OR October 6th and 7th. The Consortium includes two sessions moderated by Bryan Church (current BRIA editor). These sessions should be of interest to both PhD students interested in conducting behavioral research and new faculty conducting research in the area (i.e., first three years post PhD).
The first session is designed to provide attendees with insight on how to successfully start an academic career. Three panel members will participate in the session, all of whom are visible in behavioral accounting research: Frank Hodge (University of Washington), Steve Kaplan (Arizona State University and former BRIA editor), and Brooke Elliott (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign). The panel members will provide advice on developing a research portfolio, balancing teaching and research, developing colleagues, and "fitting into" a school.
The second session is designed to provide attendees with the insights into conducting good behavioral research, including traditional laboratory research, field studies, and experimental economics. The session includes a panel of three well-renowned researchers: Karim Jamal (University of Alberta), Ron King (Washington University - St. Louis), and Karen Sedatole (Michigan State University). The panel members will provide their advice on conducting good research.
The Consortium will take place the morning of October 6th immediately prior to the ABO Research Conference. Consortium and Conference registration is free for student members of the AAA (students need not be members of the ABO section). In addition, three nights hotel will be paid by the ABO section for the first 20 PhD student registrants. Students will share a room with another student participant (two participants to a room). Hotel pairings will be made by ABO. Registration includes Friday and Saturday lunch as well as an appetizer reception on Friday. Participants staying at the conference hotel also will receive full cooked breakfasts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Student cost will thus be only the cost of transportation and dinner Friday and Saturday. This makes the Consortium and Conference a very affordable opportunity for your students.
Questions about the Consortium can be addressed to Anne M. Magro at amagro@ou.edu. Information about the Research Conference and registration materials can be found at http://aaahq.org/meetings/2006ABO_online.htm. Students must print out the .pdf version of the Conference registration form and fax it to the AAA at (941-923-4093)— they cannot use AAA's online registration system. Included in the registration form is a section to indicate attendance at the Consortium.
In order to guarantee a free hotel room for the first 20 student registrants, registrations must be received by the AAA by August 30. Please note that this is an earlier deadline than the regular conference deadline. Registrations received later than August 30 will be considered for a hotel room if rooms are still available at the conference rate.
We are excited about this opportunity to bring together young behavioral researchers and more experienced researchers in the field to exchange ideas and experiences and hope that you will be able to attend.
